What oral sedation is

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative by mouth, in pill or liquid form, before your appointment. It helps you feel relaxed and less aware of the procedure while you stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist.

It can be used for routine visits as well as longer or more involved treatment, and it is always combined with local anesthetic where the procedure calls for numbing.

How it feels

Most people feel drowsy, calm and unconcerned about what is happening. Many patients remember little of the procedure afterwards, which can make the experience feel shorter and easier.

Because the medication continues to work for some hours, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and to stay nearby while it wears off.

Treatments where sedation can help

Oral sedation is often considered for wisdom tooth removal, tooth extractions and root canal treatment, and for any procedure that tends to raise anxiety.

Whether sedation is offered for younger patients depends on the child and the treatment; please ask us directly if you are considering it for a child.

Safety and cost

Before recommending oral sedation, Dr. Farah reviews your medical history and current medications to confirm it is appropriate for you, and gives you clear instructions to follow before and after your visit.

The cost of sedation depends on the procedure and the medication used. We are glad to explain the costs clearly before treatment so you can decide without surprises.

Benefits

Why patients choose Oral Sedation

01

Less anxiety

A calmer state of mind can make it easier to attend the care you have been putting off.

02

Greater comfort

Patients often report feeling more at ease and less aware of the sounds and sensations of treatment.

03

No needles for the sedative itself

The sedative is simply taken by mouth; local anesthetic is still used where numbing is needed.

04

Little memory of the procedure

Many people remember little of their appointment afterwards, which can make future visits feel less daunting.

Questions

Oral Sedation, answered

Will I be asleep with oral sedation?

No. You stay awake and able to respond, but you feel deeply relaxed, and many patients remember little of the procedure afterwards.

Do I need someone to drive me?

Yes. Because the sedative affects alertness for several hours, you must have a responsible adult drive you to and from your appointment. Please do not drive, work or make important decisions for the rest of the day.

Is oral sedation safe?

For appropriate patients it has a long record of safe use in dentistry. Dr. Farah reviews your health history and medications beforehand to confirm it is suitable, and our team monitors you during treatment.

Will I still need a numbing injection?

Usually, yes, if the procedure requires numbing. Oral sedation calms anxiety but does not numb the area, so local anesthetic is still used, and most people find it far easier to receive while relaxed.

How much does oral sedation cost, and is it covered?

The cost depends on the procedure and medication, and coverage varies by plan. We will explain the cost before treatment, check your insurance benefits, and CareCredit and Cherry financing are available. Call (321) 269-3802 to talk it through.
